Recent archaeological findings suggest that Scull Shoals, located halfway between Athens and Greensboro on the Oconee River in Georgia, was the site of a Trans-Oconee Republic fort built by Elijah Clarke in the late 18th Century. After disastrous flooding in the 1870s the town went into decline and by the mid-20th century Scull Shoals had become a ghost town. Ruins, including the foundations and walls of several buildings, still exist.
